Hidden Gem Holiday Destinations

Brilliant Alternatives Worth Discovering

Some of the world's most beloved destinations have earned their reputations honestly. Santorini's sunsets are as breathtaking as advertised. The Amalfi Coast genuinely does wind through one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Europe. Croatia's Dalmatian towns are medieval masterpieces. Tuscany is, well, Tuscany.

But part of the joy of travel is discovery, and there's a growing appetite among British holidaymakers for destinations that feel a little less familiar. Places where you can sit in a harbourside restaurant without a reservation made three weeks in advance. Places where the locals still outnumber the tourists, and the culture feels genuinely lived-in rather than curated for visitors.

The good news is that Europe and the wider world are full of these places. Destinations of equal beauty, history, and character that simply haven't yet had their moment in the spotlight. Here are our favourites for 2026, recommended by Co-op Holidays advisors who have been there themselves.

If You Love Santorini...

You'll Also Love the Dodecanese Islands, Greece

Symi is perhaps the most photogenic island in Greece that most travellers haven't yet discovered. Its harbour is a jaw-dropping horseshoe of neoclassical townhouses in terracotta, ochre, and cream, tumbling down to a translucent sea. Reached by a short ferry from Rhodes, it has stayed beautifully authentic, with locally run tavernas, walking trails through wild hillside villages, and barely a car in sight. If you love the Aegean and want to find a quieter, more intimate corner of it, Symi is your answer.

Tilos & Kalymnos also offer genuine, lived-in Greek island with excellent beaches and a warmly welcoming local community.

If You Love the Amalfi Coast...

You'll Also Love Puglia, Italy

At the sun-drenched heel of Italy, Puglia delivers extraordinary beauty of a very different kind. The Trulli houses of Alberobello, those extraordinary conical stone buildings found nowhere else on earth, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site that genuinely stops you in your tracks. The beaches of the Salento peninsula offer clear turquoise water and pale limestone cliffs, while the food, burrata, hand-rolled pasta, and outstanding local wine is some of the finest in the country. Fly into Brindisi or Bari and you're there in under three hours from most UK airports.

If You Love Croatia...

You'll Also Love Montenegro and Albania

Montenegro's Bay of Kotor is a spectacular sight: a winding inland sea enclosed by dramatic mountain walls, dotted with medieval coastal towns that bear the fingerprints of Venetian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian history. Kotor's atmospheric walled old town is a delight to explore, and the beaches of the Budva Riviera offer crystalline water and good infrastructure at prices that feel refreshingly reasonable.

Albania is the bolder recommendation and the one our advisors are most excited about right now. The Ionian Coast, particularly around Sarandë and the Albanian Riviera stretching south, offers dramatic coastal scenery, extraordinary water clarity, and an emerging food scene drawing on Ottoman, Greek, and Italian influences. The country's developing tourism infrastructure makes it a genuinely exciting place to visit while it still feels undiscovered.

If You Love Tuscany...

You'll Also Love Slovenia

Lake Bled is one of those landscapes that genuinely lives up to its photographs. A glacial lake, a church-topped island, a medieval castle on the clifftop above, and the Julian Alps rising behind it. In the early morning light, it is almost impossibly beautiful. Beyond the lake, Ljubljana is one of Europe's most charming and walkable capitals, with excellent food, a vibrant café culture, and a relaxed energy that is very easy to fall in love with. Slovenia consistently surprises first-time visitors, and it rarely disappoints. All this with prices that make the region feel like an extraordinary secret.

If You Love The Algarve...

You'll Also Love Northern Portugal

Porto is a city earning devoted admirers at a rapid rate, and entirely deservedly. The Ribeira waterfront, the extraordinary tile-covered churches, the bookshops, the narrow hillside streets, the way the city's industrial past has been transformed into a dynamic cultural scene: Porto has a character and energy that is entirely its own. A day trip into the Douro Valley wine country, is worth the journey alone.

The Minho region to the north is green and lush in a way that surprises visitors who associate Portugal only with Mediterranean sunshine. The coastal towns of Viana do Castelo and Caminha are architecturally beautiful and genuinely off the beaten path.

Flights to Porto from most UK airports are short, frequent, and well-priced. It's a destination that feels like an insider tip, even though it absolutely shouldn't.

If You Love the Canaries...

You'll Also Love the Azores

Nine Portuguese volcanic islands rising from the mid-Atlantic, the Azores offer something genuinely unlike anywhere else. São Miguel has volcanic crater lakes of a striking blue-green, natural hot springs you can swim in, and geysers erupting from the hillside. The whale watching here is among the best in the world, with sperm whales and blue whales regularly spotted from the clifftops. It is a more immersive, adventurous experience than a classic sun-and-beach break, and for the right traveller, it is utterly unforgettable.
