When to Go
Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometres from north to south, and the weather in each region can differ dramatically. As a general rule, the south is best from December to April while the north is most comfortable from October to April. The central coast has its own distinct wet and dry seasons. Use the strip below as a broad guide, then read on for regional detail.
Peak: Nov–Apr
The best time to cover the whole country, with dry conditions in the south (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta) and comfortable weather in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay from October onward. Hoi An is also at its most picturesque.
Shoulder: May & Oct
Transitional months that can still deliver excellent travel experiences. May is good for the north before the summer rains, while October sees the south dry out and the north remain very pleasant.
Wet season: Jun–Sep
The south and central coast see heavy monsoon rains, though the north can remain drier during this period. It's the best time to explore northern Vietnam, including Sa Pa and the mountain regions around Hanoi.

Vietnam’s weather varies considerably from north to south, which means there is usually a good part of the country to visit at any time of year.
The north, including Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, is generally cooler and drier from November to March. Central Vietnam, including Hoi An, tends to be sunniest from February to August. The south, including Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc, is warm year-round, with its driest period usually from December to April.
Vietnamese food is one of the country’s biggest highlights, with fresh herbs, fragrant broths, noodles, rice and local produce taking centre stage.
Try pho, the famous noodle soup, banh mi filled baguettes and fresh spring rolls. Each region has its own specialities too, from Hoi An’s cao lau noodles to southern dishes with tropical fruit, coconut and fresh seafood. Vietnamese coffee, often served with sweet condensed milk, is a must-try.
