Vietnam has a mostly tropical monsoon climate, with a wet season and a dry season.
The wet season runs from May to October and the weather is hot and humid with frequent rainfall. The wet season brings heavy downpours, particularly in central and northern regions, creating its lush green landscapes.
The dry season of November to April has milder temperatures and lower humidity. There are two sub-seasons: the cool, dry season (November to February) and the hot, dry season (March to April). The northern regions can experience chilly temperatures during the cool, dry season, while the south remains warm and pleasant.
The central regions, especially around Da Nang and Hoi An, experience a distinct rainy season called ‘Typhoon season’, which occurs from October to December.
For northern Vietnam, including Hanoi and Halong Bay, the ideal time to visit is during the cool, dry season from November to February, with milder temperatures and clear skies. Central Vietnam, with Hue and Hoi An, is best seen from February to August during its dry and sunny season.
Southern Vietnam, with Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, is best enjoyed during the dry season from November to April when the weather is pleasant.
The best time to visit might depend on where you want to visit, such as exploring rice terraces in Sapa during spring or enjoying beach destinations like Phu Quoc during the dry season for clear waters and sunny days.
What to eat
Be sure to try the iconic pho, a tasty noodle soup with various meat options, or sample the banh mi, a mouthwatering sandwich filled with grilled pork, pate and fresh herbs. Goi cuon, or fresh spring rolls, are a must-try, along with bun cha, a dish of grilled pork and vermicelli noodles. And don’t miss out on the delightful Vietnamese desserts, che, which are traditional sweet soups and treats.
