Mauritius is a wonderfully multicultural island, shaped by its African, Indian, Chinese and European heritage. This mix can be felt everywhere, from its temples and colourful festivals to the languages spoken and the food served in local restaurants.

The island also has a complex colonial past, having been ruled by the Dutch, French and British before gaining independence in 1968. Today, visitors can explore historic sites, visit Port Louis’ museums and markets, or learn more about the island’s sugar-producing past. Le Morne is particularly significant, recognised for its history as a refuge for escaped enslaved people.

Mauritius has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year.

The warmer, more humid summer runs from around November to April, bringing hotter temperatures and occasional tropical showers. The cooler, drier winter months from May to October are especially popular for sightseeing, beach days and outdoor activities.

For a good balance of sunshine, comfortable temperatures and lower humidity, May, October and November are excellent times to visit. Mauritius is still a year-round destination, though January to March can be wetter and carries a greater chance of tropical storms. 

Mauritian cuisine is one of the highlights of a holiday here, bringing together Indian spices, Creole cooking, Chinese influences and French flair. Fresh fish and seafood feature widely, alongside aromatic curries, noodles, rice dishes and tropical fruit.

Look out for local favourites such as dholl puri, a soft flatbread filled with ground split peas and served with curry, plus rougaille, a rich tomato-based Creole dish. Street-food markets are great for trying samosas, fritters and snacks, while resort restaurants offer everything from relaxed beach dining to elegant international menus.
