The UK and Ireland have rich histories and diverse cultures. You’ll be spoilt for choice for historic landmarks, some of which date back to prehistoric times.
In the UK there’s evidence of ancient settlements and monuments like Stonehenge, the roads and buildings left behind by the Romans, and the Medieval, Tudor and Stuart dynasties through to the British Empire and World Wars. Some of the many historic royal residences to see include Buckingham Palace in London and Hillsborough Castle and Gardens in Northern Ireland.
London is a vibrant melting pot of diverse cultures, Dublin showcases the Irish culture and traditions, and there are many fascinating customs and traditions to discover in Scotland and Wales too. Wherever you visit in the UK and Ireland, you’ll find something fascinating to experience at every turn.
Both the UK and Ireland experience a maritime climate influenced by the North Atlantic Drift, which brings mild weather and quite a bit of rain. Due to both countries’ proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the weather can be very changeable. Both the UK and Ireland have all four seasons, and typically the southern regions are warmer than Scotland and the northern areas of England and Wales.
While summers bring warm average temperatures of between 15 and 25°C (59–77°F), and some occasional heatwaves, there is little predictability with the weather, so whenever you are visiting, be sure to bring a jacket and an umbrella! Spring and autumn typically bring cooler weather than summer, but these times of year are similarly unpredictable. In winter, since northern areas are cooler than the south, you’ll be more likely to experience cooler temperatures and snow in the north.
Both the UK and Ireland experience a great deal of cloud, but when the sun does come out the picturesque natural landscape looks beautiful, so you’re in for a treat.
Spring is a lovely time to visit as the weather warms up and flowers bloom. Autumn is similarly beautiful with the changing colours of the leaves. Summer brings warmer temperatures and longer days for you to explore, and winter is a spectacle of Christmas decorations, frosty mornings and occasional snow.
Accommodation gets booked up quickly in the peak tourist seasons, so prices will be higher. If you plan to book your holiday to coincide with a major event such as Wimbledon or the Edinburgh Festival, be sure to plan well in advance.
