When to Go
Crete enjoys one of the longest and most reliable summer seasons in the Mediterranean, with warm sunshine from April right through to October. As Greece's largest island, it also offers enough variety — beaches, mountain villages, ancient ruins and gorges — to reward a visit at almost any time of year. Peak: Jul–Aug
The hottest and most vibrant months, with long sunny days, warm crystal-clear seas, and the beaches of Elafonissi and Balos at their most beautiful. The island's resorts are lively and the evenings are warm and long.
Shoulder: Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct
Arguably the best time to experience all that Crete has to offer. Warm enough for beach days from May onwards, with comfortable temperatures for hiking the Samaria Gorge, exploring the Minoan palace at Knossos, and discovering the old towns of Chania and Rethymno.
Off-season: Nov–Mar
Mild and peaceful, with Crete's mountain villages, olive groves, and historic cities taking on a quiet, local character. Chania and Heraklion remain rewarding year-round for food lovers, with Crete's celebrated cuisine best enjoyed at a slower, unhurried pace.

Crete overview
Crete is considered the birthplace of Europe's earliest advanced civilisation. The ancient Minoans flourished here over 4,000 years ago, leaving behind remarkable archaeological sites including the Palace of Knossos near Heraklion. Throughout its history the island has also been shaped by Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rule, each leaving their mark on its architecture, traditions and culture.
Today you'll find impressive Venetian harbours, historic monasteries, mountain villages where traditions remain strong, and museums showcasing thousands of years of history. Festivals celebrating music, dance and local food take place throughout the year, offering visitors an authentic taste of Cretan life.
Crete enjoys one of the longest holiday seasons in the Mediterranean, with warm sunshine from April through to October. Summers are typically hot, dry and ideal for beach holidays, while spring and autumn offer pleasantly warm temperatures that are perfect for sightseeing, walking and exploring the island.
The south coast often enjoys even warmer weather than the north, making Crete an excellent choice for early and late season sunshine. Sea temperatures remain comfortable well into autumn, allowing visitors to enjoy swimming long after many other European destinations begin to cool.
Cretan cuisine is regarded as one of the healthiest and most flavourful in the Mediterranean. Meals are centred around fresh local ingredients including olive oil, vegetables, seafood, herbs and locally reared meats. Traditional tavernas serve generous portions of favourites such as lamb with herbs, grilled seafood, dakos, stuffed vine leaves and slow-cooked stews.
