Take a journey through the long and rich history of Crete, which according to Greek mythology, was the birthplace of Zeus, the father of gods and humans. Witness the remarkable Knossos Palace, which was the grand capital of the Minoans, the oldest civilisation in Europe, or take in Heraklion’s museums to learn more.
Marvel at the stunning Venetian architecture around Chania harbour, and so much more. If history’s your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Crete.
Crete has a temperate Mediterranean climate, so the summers are hot and dry and the winters mild with rain and cloud, with January and February being the coldest months. If you’re looking for sun, June to September are the best months, with July being the hottest with average temperatures of 26°C (79°F) and around 12 hours of sunshine per day. But if you’re looking for some sunshine outside of the peak season, there will still be plenty of sun in October, but it will be cooler than the summer months.
The best time to visit Crete depends on what you like to do, but holidaymakers typically visit between June and September. May and October will still see good weather, but as these months are outside of peak season there might not be as much open. July and August have reliably hot weather and lots of sunshine, so it’s the busiest time and popular with families enjoying the school holidays. If exploring the outdoors is your thing, October will enable you to enjoy the natural beauty of Crete without the searing heat of the summer months.
Take a trip to the remote and breathtaking natural wonder that is Elafonisi beach. Walk along the magical pink sand and bathe in the clear blue water.
Crete has much to offer in terms of culinary delights, with its Mediterranean diet of fresh fish and salad. You’ll also be spoilt for choice with all the Greek staples such as gyros, souvlaki and moussaka. But if you want to get a true taste of Crete, try some of the Cretan cheeses, dakos (soaked rusk, chopped tomato and feta cheese), smoked pork or Cretan-style lamb, or get adventurous with fried snail or sea urchin.
If you’re travelling with kids, there are plenty of international cuisines available to keep everyone happy. With restaurants and tavernas around every corner, you’ll never go hungry in Crete.
