This fascinating blend of cultures can be seen everywhere, from ancient archaeological sites and medieval castles to traditional villages and religious landmarks.
History lovers can explore the UNESCO-listed archaeological treasures of Paphos, discover the impressive Tombs of the Kings, or visit the ancient city-kingdom of Kourion overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Inland, charming mountain villages preserve traditional Cypriot customs, while Nicosia, the world's last divided capital city, offers a unique insight into the island's complex past.
Today, Cyprus successfully blends its historic heritage with modern resort life, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy world-class beaches while exploring thousands of years of history and culture.
Cyprus has one of the warmest and sunniest climates in the Mediterranean, with around 300 days of sunshine a year. Summers (June to September) are hot and largely dry, with daytime temperatures regularly reaching the low-to-mid 30s°C along the coast, while winters (December to February) are mild by European standards, typically ranging from 10–17°C, making it a popular winter sun destination. Rainfall is concentrated in the winter months, with summer seeing little to no rain at all. Sea temperatures stay swimmable from around April through to November, and the island even sees light snowfall on the higher peaks of the Troodos Mountains in winter, popular with skiers from nearby countries.
Cypriot cuisine reflects the island's position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, creating a delicious fusion of Greek, Turkish and Mediterranean flavours. Fresh ingredients, traditional recipes and warm hospitality are at the heart of dining in Cyprus.
One of the most popular dining experiences is a traditional meze, where a selection of small dishes are served over several courses, allowing visitors to sample a wide variety of local specialities. Expect everything from grilled meats and fresh seafood to dips, salads and local cheeses.
Must-try dishes include halloumi, Cyprus' world-famous cheese, alongside favourites such as souvlaki, kleftiko slow-roasted lamb, and freshly caught seafood served in coastal tavernas. Sweet treats such as loukoumades and traditional pastries provide the perfect finish to any meal.
Local wines have been produced on the island for thousands of years, while Commandaria, one of the world's oldest named wines, remains a unique Cypriot speciality worth trying during your visit.
Whether dining in a family-run village taverna or a stylish beachfront restaurant, Cyprus offers a memorable culinary experience that is as much a part of the holiday as the beaches and sunshine.
