Explore the fascinating ruins of ancient Paphos at the archaeological park, including the Odeon amphitheatre, Roman villas with well-preserved mosaics, and the Tombs of the Kings.
Paphos, located on the southwest coast of Cyprus, has a rich history and cultural heritage, dating back to ancient times. Paphos was the former capital of the island during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, and later experienced prosperity as well as a series of invasions and Byzantine, Arab and Crusader rule. The Ottomans took control of Cyprus in 1571 until British rule in 1878, but Cyprus gained independence from British rule in 1960.
Historical sites include the famous Paphos Archaeological Park, home to ancient villas, tombs and the Paphos Odeon. In Greek mythology, Paphos is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, and this legend has influenced the city’s traditions and cultural celebrations. Its rich history blends beautifully with its modern present, so it’s a fantastic destination for both beach lovers and history enthusiasts.
Paphos has a Mediterranean climate, so the winters are mild and the summers hot and dry, and it is generally pleasant all year round. If you visit in spring, temperatures will range from around 19°C (66°F) in March to around 24°C (75°F) in May, but there may well be some rainfall. Summer sees long days of sunshine and the temperatures are high in the mid-30s (°C) (mid-90s (°F)) or higher, particularly in July and August.
There’s very little rain in summer, so it’s the perfect time of year to soak up some sun and relax on a beach. If you visit Paphos in autumn, you can still enjoy fine weather, with average high temperatures of around 28°C (82°F) in September, down to around 22°C (72°F) in November. Like in spring, there’s the chance of some rain, but it remains fairly dry compared to the winter season, which is much cooler with higher chances of rain.
If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine and long days on the beach or water sports, then the best time to visit Paphos is the summer months, but this is also the busiest period.
Spring is a great time to take in the island’s beautiful landscapes and explore the historical sites before it gets too hot. If you’re looking for some sun later in the year, autumn is a lovely time to visit as the weather is still pleasant for outdoor activities and the sea still fairly warm for swimming. If you’re looking to get away in winter, the weather in Paphos is mild but the chance of rain is higher, so it’s a good time to explore the historical and cultural highlights.
Spring and autumn are a fantastic time to visit to avoid the crowds and enjoy the weather, and hotels are also cheaper than the peak season!
When visiting Paphos, don’t miss the kleftiko (slow-cooked lamb or goat), the Cypriot casserole tava, or a meze for a selection of traditional Cypriot dishes. For those with a sweet tooth, try small fried dough balls, coated in honey and cinnamon and crushed nuts, or soutzouk loukoum, the traditional Cypriot delight. Paphos offers a range of other international cuisines too, so if you’re travelling with children, don’t worry, there’s something for everyone.
