The beautiful area of Dalaman is located on the southwestern coast of Turkey and boasts a rich history and culture. The area has been inhabited since ancient times by various civilisations such as the Lycians, Persians, Greeks and Romans. Many have left their mark on the region, visible in the ruins, ancient cities and archaeological sites.
The Lycian rock tombs, dating back to the 4th century BC, are a historical highlight which shouldn’t be missed. The later Byzantine and Ottoman periods continued to shape the region, and throughout the 20th century, Dalaman experienced significant development leading to it becoming the popular tourist destination it is today.
The region embraces the culture and traditions of Turkey, reflected in its customs, arts and crafts, and expressed in festivals, music, dance and cuisine.
Dalaman has a Mediterranean climate, so the summers are very hot and dry with very little rainfall during this time. Average temperatures range between 30 and 35°C (86–95°F), so it’s a fantastic time to soak up the sun and partake in all the summer activities the area has to offer. But this is, of course, also the most popular time to visit. Spring in Dalaman is very pleasant with temperatures around 25 to 30°C (77–86°F) during the day, but you can expect some rainfall from time to time.
Autumn brings similar temperatures to spring, gradually cooling after summer, so it’s a great time of year to sightsee or explore the great outdoors.
Winter brings much cooler weather, with daytime temperatures dipping to 15 to 20°C (59–68°F) and 5 to 10°C (41–50°F) at night. It’s also the rainy season, so pack an umbrella and warmer clothes if you plan to visit at this time of year.
Choosing when to visit Dalaman will depend on whether you enjoy the busy peak season of summer or you’re looking for a quieter getaway. The area is a popular choice for family holidays, groups of friends and romantic holidays in the summer months, due to the guaranteed sunshine this season brings. But if you’re looking to bag a cheap holiday or last-minute deal, choose the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn to escape to this beautiful Turkish coast.
Explore the local restaurants, cafes and markets to get a taste of the delicious flavours of Dalaman. Start your meal with a selection of mezes (small dishes), like hummus, stuffed vine leaves and yoghurt-based dips like cacik.
Satisfy your hunger with a Turkish kebab, gözleme (filled flatbread) or lamacun (Turkish pizza). For something sweet, try the vast array of baklava and Turkish delight. And don’t forget to sample the tea or the strong Turkish coffee.
As a popular tourist destination, Dalaman caters for a wide range of tastes, so if you’re travelling as a family, there will always be something for the kids to eat as well.
