As the largest island in the Dodecanese group, Rhodes boasts a long and rich history spanning thousands of years back to ancient times. Rhodes was influenced by many civilisations – the Minoans, Mycenaeans, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Knights of St John, Ottomans and Italians. Rhodes reached its peak during the Hellenistic period when it was home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Some ancient landmarks are still standing today, such as the Acropolis of Rhodes and Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its medieval architecture and charming cobblestone streets. Today Rhodes is a popular tourist destination for travellers seeking sun and sea. It’s impossible not to be captivated by the ancient beauty of this stunning island.
Rhodes has a Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers and mild winters, so it’s a popular destination for sun-seekers over many months of the year.
Spring is mild and pleasant with average temperatures ranging from 17 to 23°C (63–73°F). Summers are dry and hot, and it’s an excellent season to spend time on the beach and enjoy water sports. Average temperatures range from 28 to 34°C (82–93°F), with occasional heatwaves taking temperatures even higher.
If you’re looking for some post-summer sun, Rhodes is a great destination in autumn with temperatures averaging between 22 and 28°C (72–82°F), so it’s still very pleasant, without the searing summer sun. The winter months are much cooler, with daytime temperatures averaging between 13 and 17°C (55–63°F), so it’s still warmer than many other parts of Europe.
Spring in Rhodes is lovely, with floral blooms and mild weather, and it’s a great time of year to avoid the crowds of high summer. Rhodes in summer is an excellent destination for those seeking guaranteed sunshine, time on the beach and dips in the stunning Aegean Sea. Autumn still brings fine weather, and since the peak season has passed, Rhodes is far less busy and hotel prices are cheaper.
Rhodes is not a beach destination in winter and many places will be closed, but if you’re looking for a change of scenery and a chance to explore the island’s history and culture, it’s a great time of year to do so.
Wander through the medieval Old Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stroll through the charming narrow streets, admire the medieval architecture and visit the Palace of the Grand Master.
The cuisine in Rhodes blends Mediterranean flavours, fresh seafood and aromatic herbs. While you’ll find all the Greek staples available, don’t miss the opportunity to sample some of the local delicacies, such as pitaroudia (chickpea fritters), koulouria (sesame-coated bread rings) and pastitsio (a baked pasta dish).
There’s seafood aplenty in Rhodes, and if you’re a cheese lover, be sure to try the local feta and kasseri. Or, if you’re after something sweeter, look out for the local baklava and loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts). Rhodes boasts many cafes, restaurants and tavernas, so if you’re travelling with kids there are plenty of options available to keep everyone happy.
