UK passport holders travelling to Japan for tourism do not currently need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Entry requirements can change, so it is always recommended to check the latest government travel advice before you depart.

Japan’s official currency is the Japanese Yen. Cash is still widely used, particularly in smaller towns, local restaurants and rural areas, so it’s a good idea to carry some yen with you. Credit and debit cards are increasingly accepted in cities, hotels and larger stores, and ATMs are readily available, especially at convenience stores.

There are no mandatory vaccinations required for travel to Japan. It is recommended that routine vaccinations are up to date before travelling. Depending on your itinerary and personal circumstances, you may wish to consult your GP or travel clinic well in advance of departure for tailored advice.

Japan is considered one of the safest countries in the world for travellers. Crime rates are very low, public transport is well organised, and visitors often feel comfortable exploring both cities and smaller towns at any time of day.
