Kenya’s rich history dates back thousands of years, with early human fossils discovered in the Rift Valley, earning it the nickname "the cradle of humanity." Over the centuries, Kenya has been influenced by Arab traders, European settlers, and local tribes, creating a fascinating blend of cultures. The country gained independence from Britain in 1963, and today, Kenya is known for its vibrant culture, from the traditional Maasai and Samburu communities to the modern influences seen in Nairobi.
Kenya is also famous for its diverse music, dance, and art, often inspired by the country’s many ethnic groups. Whether it’s the rhythmic beats of Swahili taarab music or the colourful beadwork of the Maasai, Kenya’s culture is full of life and creativity.
Kenya enjoys a tropical climate along its coast, with warm, humid weather and year-round sunshine. Inland, particularly in the savannah and highland regions, the climate is more temperate, with warm days and cooler nights. The rainy seasons typically occur from March to May and October to December, but even during these times, rain tends to come in short, heavy bursts, leaving plenty of sunshine.
The country’s diverse geography means you can enjoy everything from hot, dry weather in the lowlands to cooler conditions in the highlands and around Mount Kenya.
Kenyan cuisine is a mix of African, Indian, and Middle Eastern influences, offering a variety of delicious dishes. One of the most popular meals is nyama choma, which is grilled meat, usually goat or beef, served with sides like ugali, a maize-based porridge, and sukuma wiki, a type of sautéed leafy green. Another staple is chapati, a flatbread that’s often eaten with stews or curries.
For a more coastal flavour, try samaki wa kupaka, a coconut fish curry, or the popular street food mandazi, a type of fried doughnut. Kenya is also known for its fresh tropical fruit and vibrant Swahili dishes, especially along the coast. To wash it all down, a cup of Kenyan chai or Tusker beer is a must!
The best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to do. For safari enthusiasts, the dry seasons between June to October and January to February are perfect for spotting wildlife as animals gather around water sources. The Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras move through the Masai Mara, typically occurs between July and October, making it an unmissable event for wildlife lovers.
If you’re looking for a beach holiday, December to March is the best time to enjoy Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline, with warm, sunny days perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxing by the sea. For trekking and climbing Mount Kenya, the best time is during the dry months of January and February or June to September, when the trails are clear and the weather is stable.
For a more cultural experience, visiting during the rainy seasons can be ideal for seeing lush landscapes and fewer crowds, and you might get the chance to attend one of Kenya’s many festivals, such as the Lamu Cultural Festival or Maasai Mara Cultural Festival.
