Antarctica has no indigenous population, but its history is rich with exploration. Early expeditions in the 19th and 20th centuries, including those by explorers like Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton, paved the way for scientific research. Today, the continent is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, dedicated to peaceful scientific exploration. Visitors experience the culture of the research stations, historic huts, and the spirit of international collaboration rather than a traditional local culture.
Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth. Temperatures vary widely depending on location and season, ranging from -60°C in winter to around 0°C on the coast in summer. The continent is extremely dry and windy, with glaciers, ice shelves, and snow-covered landscapes dominating the scenery. Coastal areas in summer are more temperate and accessible for wildlife sightings and cruising.
The best time to visit is during the Antarctic summer (November to March), when temperatures are milder, icebergs are more navigable, and wildlife such as penguins, seals, and whales are most active. Expedition cruises are typically offered from Ushuaia (Argentina) or Punta Arenas (Chile), and shorter trips to sub-Antarctic islands are also popular. Winter visits are extremely rare due to harsh conditions and near-total darkness.
