The beautiful Greek island of Kos, located in the Aegean Sea, has a long and fascinating history dating back to prehistoric times.
Kos was the home of the School of Medicine, founded by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, and also participated in the Trojan War. In Roman times, Kos prospered as a trade and cultural centre.
Kos has a rich and vibrant culture influenced by its history, and has several religious and cultural festivals throughout the year. Today Kos is not just a popular tourist destination, it’s also a place where ancient history and modern culture coexist, providing visitors with a unique experience.
Located in the Aegean Sea, Kos enjoys a Mediterranean climate with generally pleasant weather throughout the year. Spring brings mild weather with average temperatures ranging between 15 and 25°C (59–77°F). The summer months of June to August are hot and dry with temperatures averaging between 25 and 35°C (77–95°F).
With heatwaves occurring occasionally, the weather can be even hotter. Kos maintains a mild climate into the autumn, when, like in spring, temperatures average between 15 and 25°C (59–77°F). While winter is mild compared to other parts of northern Europe, average temperatures are between 10 and 15°C (50–59°F).
The best time to visit Kos will depend on your circumstances and preferences. If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine and long, hot days spent on the beach, the summer months between June and August are your best bet. However, bear in mind that this is the busiest season, so you can expect the island to be more crowded and prices higher than other seasons.
Spring is a lovely time to visit the island, before the searing heat of summer really sets in. It’s a great time to experience the natural beauty and floral blooms. Venues are starting to open up ready for summer, but it won’t be too crowded, and prices will be a little cheaper than the peak summer season. Similarly, autumn is cheaper than summer and can be a good time to engage in outdoor activities, when the temperatures and the beautiful Aegean Sea are still relatively warm.
Winter is not the time for a beach holiday and much of the island will be closed for the season, but it’s a great time to explore the history and culture without the crowds.
Wander through the charming streets of Kos Town, visit historical sites like the Castle of the Knights and the Ancient Agora, and enjoy shopping and dining at the many cafes, restaurants and tavernas in the town centre.
Kos offers a range of culinary treats to delight your taste buds in its range of Greek cuisine with a little island twist. Expect a Mediterranean blend of flavours and all the Greek staples, but plenty of international options are available too. If you’re a cheese lover, try krasotiri, a traditional cheese unique to Kos, made from goat’s milk and aged in red wine. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on trying some Greek treats such as loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts).
