Holidays to Mahon

The city of Mahon is located on the extreme east coast of Menorca; ideal for those who prefer not to spend their holiday at the beach, but are still searching for beautiful, sunny weather. The nearby International Aeropuerto de Menorca is only a short 6km away from the city centre, enabling holiday makers to arrive at their destination in no time at all.

The centre of Mahon is often busy and crowded; however, this hustle and bustle of a city is home to around 30,000 of the entire island’s resident population of 94,000.

The harbour splits the city in to two parts; the commercial development and the historic city centre is located along the southern shore, and the newer residential developments are situated on the northern shore.

The best way to explore this historic old town is on foot; navigate the narrow pedestrianized streets, relax in one of the numerous pavement cafes and bars, and discover the many historical buildings, the oldest of which being the Arch de San Roque, which are the remains of the wall that once encircled the city.

There’s also a portrait gallery inside the Town Hall, featuring paintings of many famous people of Menorca throughout history. Visit the impressive Church of Santa Maria; originally constructed in 1287, and rebuilt between 1748 and 1772, this church is steeped in history.

For a break from the many cultural attractions Mahon offers, take a stroll along the portside where there are a number of bars and restaurants; dine with spectacular views of the harbours, and soak up the atmosphere of this lively city.

Mahon does not offer its own beach; however, if you are wishing to escape the business of the city for a while, the nearby Es Grau (10km north of the city) has a small sandy beach, with a variety of water sports equipment available for hire.

Mahon is perfect for go-getters who prefer to soak up the culture and history of a place, rather than sit on a beach, so call us at Co-op Travel today and let one of our friendly holiday experts find your perfect Mahon holiday!
