Explore Scotland and it's magnificent landscapes almost entirely by rail, with unrivalled views of world-famous scenery. Hidden glens, lochs, beaches and mountains await on the adventure of a lifetime, whether you are already a train enthusiast or about to be converted, this tour will leave you with lifelong memories and a yearning to return. This experience departs on Sundays in 2021: 30 May, 13 June, 27 June, 25 July, 1st August, 22 August, 29 August, 5 September, 26 September.
Our “Highland Railways and Hills” tour takes in much of Scotland, using a mixture of scheduled service trains, steam railways, ferries – and feet! Scotland’s railways offer access to incredible scenery, and trains provide views so much better than you will ever see from a car.
Head to the Highlands and immerse yourself in the stunning Scottish scenery, get off the beaten track and discover magical sights missed by most tourists, and come away satisfied in the knowledge that you have seen the best of Scotland from a unique perspective.
The walking throughout this tour we class as “easy to moderate” – suitable for people of reasonable fitness who enjoy walking or the outdoors but who needn’t necessarily have any previous hiking experience. Walks each day are between 5-7 hours, with mostly lower level walks with little ascent on good trails. There are easier alternatives to the ascent of Ben na Lap which the guide will advise depending on weather conditions and fitness levels of the group. You will be on pathed terrain throughout the week, but this will vary to being quite rugged or sometimes boggy. If you have any doubts about your suitability for the trip please just ask!
Your accommodation for the week is in personally selected small hotels and guest houses in Aviemore, Skye and Fort William. We only use places we have personally visited and approved and you will be warmly received by your host.
Evening meals for the whole group on this trip are normally taken at a local inn or restaurant. On all our tours we make a special effort to ensure that your evening meals are a highlight of the trip and seafood is a particular speciality on the Skye part of this trip. Specific dietary requirements can normally be catered for if we know in advance. Packed lunches are not included.
