Holidays to Lake Garda

Situated in the east of the Italian lake district, which stretches across the north of this ever-popular European holiday destination, Lake Garda is the largest of the Italian lakes and arguably the most beautiful. In the height of the summer season Garda attracts holidaymakers from across the world, all keen to enjoy the delights that this alpine region has to offer.

Located only about an hour and a half from the centre of Milan, Lake Garda can be reached with ease. Attractive resorts are stretched out along the length of the lake, including Bardolino and Garda which offer an all-round package and something for everyone. Sirmione, an ancient fortified town situated at the south of the lake is one of the most popular visitor destinations thanks to the picturesque views on offer. Head for the north of Lake Garda if you're keen on more mountainous terrain and want access to plenty of sporting activities, or take in the gentle slopes of the south where you’ll find a more Mediterranean atmosphere.

Lake Garda holidays are especially with watersports enthusiasts, and whether your preference is for water-skiing, jet skiing, sailing or diving, you won’t have a problem staying entertained. The resorts of Riva del Garda and Torbole, situated at the north end of Lake Garda, are well-known as hotspots for windsurfers, and have hosted a number of the sport’s major competitions.

Ötzi the Iceman is another of the area’s major draws. Killed after being wounded by an arrow and then found frozen solid in the Italian Alps in 1991, 5,300 years after his death, Ötzi now has a home at the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Bolzano. The museum is located just over an hour’s drive to the north of Lake Garda and for those who have time to go exploring is well worth a visit.

Finding quality accommodation in the area is no problem. Cheap hotels in Lake Garda are plentiful, as are more exclusive villa rentals to suit couples and families.
