Newcastle Airport

Just six miles from the city centre, Newcastle airport is the main departure point for holidaymakers from a large area of north-east England as they head off on their holidays.

It holds the distinction of being the first airport in the UK to harness technology to let passengers check-in online without having to negotiate the long queues this operation often entails.

Although there has been an aerodrome on the site since 1935, the airport has expanded greatly with the growth of package holidays, leading to its entire north side now being devoted to handling this traffic.

Flights from Newcastle airport are mainly operated by the UK's major holiday airlines, with EasyJet, Jet2, Thomson and Thomas Cook being its biggest users, and serving a wide variety of destinations.

The airport is used by more than 4.3million passengers every year, and the growth in passenger traffic has led to plans to expand the southern side of the site, which handles freight, mail and corporate flights.

Under plans for its continued growth in the next few years, a runway extension, new hotel, multi-storey short-stay car park, and possibly a direct rail connection are in the pipeline. However, there is direct access to the terminal from the airport's dedicated Tyne & Wear Metro station, which offers direct services to the city centre in under 25 minutes, and to Sunderland in less than an hour. The site is also linked directly to the A1 trunk road by a purpose-built dual carriageway.

The sunshine resorts of Spain are among the most popular destinations served, but onward connections to further afield, and all the major destinations in the rest of Europe are offered via the busiest air route from Newcastle airport, that to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, the nearest hub airport to this part of the UK.

You'll find plenty to do to occupy you while you wait for to fly from Newcastle airport. Its shopping plaza was substantially upgraded a few years ago, while there is plenty of seating for those who want to rest before heading off on the most exciting stage of their holiday journey.
