Here are our recommendations of the top attractions to experience during your stay in Cancun.
A world heritage site, recently named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is a must-see attraction for anyone planning a holiday in Cancun. It is located a couple of hours' drive from the main centre of Cancun, but it is well worth the journey. It is an exretemely important part of Mayan culture and contains the iconic Temple of Kukulcan (the Mayan pyramid). The Temple of Kukulcan dominates Chichen Itza and is an extremely popular attraction as people gather to watch the shadow of the serpent move down the side of the temple as the sun moves across the sky.
The great ball court is another stunning spectacle where the ancient Mayans played their traditional games. It is renowned for it's amazing acoustic properties where small sounds carry over great distances.
There are also many amazing statues, carvings and temples to explore at Chichen Itza, we recommend booking in a full day for a visit.
Located within the coastal town of Tulum itself, the historic walled city of Tulum sits on top of a cliff with amazing views out into the Caribbean. It can be found approximately eighty miles south of the main resort centre and is another place that is well worth a visit.
Built in the 13th century, this walled site is an important piece of Mayan history and it incorporates 'El Castillo' (the Castle), which was originally used as a lookout tower and is situated opposite a natural break in the coral reef. It was a very important site for the Mayans and was a key part of their defences.
As well as the beautiful castle ruins, there us also a stunning beach with crystal clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Visiting Tulum will help to make your holiday in Cancun an epxerience you won't forget!
Selvatica is located beteen Cancun and Playa Del Carmen (just 30 minutes from either resort) and has over 330 acres of jungle to explore! It features amazing high rope circuits, which include an award winning 'Aventura' zipline circuit (11 ziplines) and a more recent addition - the 'Extremo' course which has 12 ziplines! There is also an 'Aerial Trek' course which has over 20 individual sections. Selvatica is perfect for those seeking adrenaline and adventure on their Cancun holiday.
You can also take a ride in or even drive a selection of extreme off-road vehicles through this fantastic jungle setting.
Kids from as young as 3 can visit the park, but minimun age restrictions vary by individal activity - please check all age limits prior to booking any activities.
Located less than an hour from Cancun, Xcaret is a truly unique attraction. Originally opened in 1990, but having had several new additions since then, there is a huge choice of nature based activities available at Xcaret.
Set in a stunning natural location, Xcaret features natural lagoons, a river running through a Mayan village, a man-made 'sluice' (river) that includes underground sections where you can experience a unique variety of snorkeling. There is also a great beach, the opportunity to swim with dolphins, a manatee sanctuary and much much more!
As well as the water based activities there are also a number of specatacular ruins within the park which are well worth a look. The entertainment continues into the evening at Xcaret with folk dancing and other traditional Mayan shows in the huge 'Gran Tlachco' theatre.
We recommend you spend at least 1 full day at Xcaret to fully experience all it's amazing attractions.
A largely unspoilt island a short hop from the mainland, Cozumel is a very popular spot for Cancun holidays.
With it's stunning white beaches and multitude of snorkeling opportunites, Cozumel is perfect if you are looking to explore the crystal Caribbean waters. Kitesurfing is widely available and there are opportunities to swim with dolphins.
Cozumel is also a popular stop for Cruises in the Caribbean and it features a number of hotels and many restaurants and some bars and disco's if you're planning more than just a flying visit!
Less than 10 miles from the Cancun coast, Isla Mujeres is easily reached by a short boat trip and due to it's proximity to one of the many coral reefs in the area, it is very popular for anyone looking for some amazing snorkeling or scuba diving opportunities. It is possible to stay on Isla Mujeres itself, but if you're just looking for somewhere to visit during a holiday in Cancun, it's a wonderful place to take a relaxing boat trip to. Isla Mujeres is home to a population of Sea Turtles and there is a sanctuary on the island that is open to the public and well worth a visit.
You can also visit some excellent restaurants on the island where you can sample the fresh local seafood.
Isla Mujeres is another place where you can experience the magic of swimming with Dolphins - we recommend booking well in advance.
