Holidays to San Miguel de Abona

Cheap holidays to San Miguel de AbonaTenerife has long been thought of as a much hotter England. However, if you travel just 8km inland from the all-day English breakfasts of Golf de Sur, you’ll find the real Tenerife. San Miguel de Abona is surrounded by landscapes of neat terraces, covered in vines, potatoes, rocky outcrops of volcanic cones, and deep barrancos (valleys), covered in cacti and prickly pear plants.

One of the oldest towns in the south of Tenerife, San Miguel de Abona was an important dwelling of the Guanche, Tenerife’s original inhabitants. Nowadays the town is mainly populated by Tinerfeños, along with a smattering of British and German ex-pats who have renovated some of the older properties, restoring them to their former glory.

To discover the true beauty of San Miguel de Abona, head behind the main street towards the iconic landmark tower of the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcangel, and you’ll find traditional wooden balconies, quaint 18th century town houses and old fashioned cobbled streets.

San Miguel de Abona is a small community; tourist accommodation is scarce and much of its tourism is found from visitors merely passing through, enabling the inhabitants to preserve it’s natural beauty and keep it as a well-guarded secret.

Strongly known for its rich agriculture, San Miguel is famous for its tomatoes, potatoes and vines; all of the restaurants use locally sourced produce to produce some very fine tasting food. Tuck into the local tapas cuisine or feast on steak; whatever your tastes, you’re guaranteed to find something to your liking in this small, pretty town.

Although not really frequented often by tourists, there is a wonderful hotel; the Hotel Rural San Miguel offers has named each of its rooms after its 17th century function; you could find yourself resting your head in the hen house, the cheese making room, or even the goat shed. Alternatively, la Bodega Casa Rural boasts four cottages offering luxury self-catering accommodation, based in the former town of bodega.

To witness some of Tenerife’s true beauty, take a trip to the beautiful town of San Miguel de Abona.
