Holidays to La Orotava

Holidays to La Orotava

La Oratova is located on the north coast of Tenerife, situated approximately 33km west of Tenerife North Airport. At Co-operative Travel we recommend the town of La Oratova, which was once home to the wealthiest and noblest families on the island, who settled here after Spain’s conquest.

The fertile slopes of the valley were ideal for growing sugar and vines, both crops owing to the wealth of the town landowners. Today however, the main crop of the valley is bananas.

La Oratova is still Tenerife’s most aristocratic town; its streets are still lined with Renaissance mansions and architectural treasures, such as beautiful churches and convents. There are also a variety of independent and exclusive boutiques for you to shop in, as well as numerous elegant restaurants serving up some of the finest cuisine on the island, and awe-inspiring gardens.

Tourists often frequent the Casa de los Balcones and marvel at the splendid balconies and inner courtyards with their fantastic views over the valley. Casa Mendez-Fonseca offers a small museum for a small entrance fee, where you can even taste some of the local wines.

The numerous churches and monasteries of La Oratova offer some truly stunning architecture for any visitor to experience. Every June there is a festival named the Feast of Corpus Christi; during this time, streets are covered in flower carpets and the town hall has a wonderful backdrop of flowers, coloured soil and sand – this tapestry has recently entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest of its kind in the world. A perfect opportunity for you to take advantage of our cheap holidays to Tenerife.

Take a look at the Museo de Artesania Iberoamerica; a former convent displaying handmade craftwork from Latin America and Spain. Alternatively, visit the ceramic museum and wonder at the large display of traditional Spanish pottery.

Sample the best local cuisine and fine wines at one of the many restaurants in the town, or chill out in the evening with a lovely glass of wine from a local bar.
